You bought that beast of a camera, but it doesn't bring you the great pictures the salesman promised you. Walking the streets with your camera, you feel shy, how do you approach someone that is a complete stranger to you? Blocked like a writer hanging above a clean sheet of paper. When you compare your pictures with the ones you really like, you almost feel like giving up. Recognise something? Well, just realise that a machine, even if it is the best, needs someone to control it. You can't buy vision in a photo store. The good news is that you can get inspired and helped to get on the right track and have fun again with your camera.
Better than putting all your money in gear, find yourself an ambiance to develop your vision and skills. This workshop offers you a mix of technical, compositional and emotional skills to get more interesting photos. It is going to be fun, learning photography is like learning more about yourself. Just read the testimonials of some former participants below and see if that fits you.
There will be both theoretical input, as well as practical exercises. You don't need special technical skills, an expensive camera* or the best photographer before you enter the workshop. Just be open to find your way in photography.
This is a 2,5 day workshop, to create the time to really focus on your photography. It is a whole weekend, you might be tired afterwards, but you wouldn't have like to miss it, I promise.
If you want to shoot film (analog) also bring a digital camera, as there will not be enough time to develop your rolls of film. Bring both, so you won't miss your shots on film.
* In case you think about buying a new camera, I advise you to wait. After the workshop you will know better which tool will serve your photographical needs best.
We start at Friday night and take our time to get to know each other. You will bring your set of 'best' 5-10 images and get a serious and honest portfolio review. We will find the strength in your work and help you to improve your photography skills. During the reviews you will get plenty of input about composition, technique and the basics of street photography. Afterwards we will get a drink to get to know each other a little better.
Tipps and tricks are on the menu to help you getting ready for the shooting. After the basics, we will enter the streets together for a photo walk, so you can practise your new insights and see what the others do. The photowalk is a great opportunity to practise with your new insights, see how the others are doing their thing and so to find out what you need next.
Back at the workshop venue we will talk through the situations we encountered. There will also be info about best camera settings and time to discuss street ethics.
Afterwards you will get on your way, working on an assignment we created in line with your interest. At the end of the day, we will catch up again to have some talks about our experiences and have some more drinks and maybe a simple meal.
At Sunday morning you will have time to go shooting, select and edit your photos. In the beginning of the afternoon we start our photo review based on prints of your series of photographs taken during the weekend. This positive, critical review will also help you to start defining your personal style in photography. And of course, help you on a compositional, emotional and technical level.
A digital camera, a laptop, a pen and some paper. And of course your 5-10 selection of best photographs.
"I alreay discovered my love for photography, one should only discover the love for beautiful photographs. It's very easy to decide to join a workshop with Harold. With a professional who loves the art of photography and loves to share all he knows with others. In an atmosphere that is totally unique. These workshops fascinate, motivate, encourage and raise your phantasy."
"Our weekend-workshop was an extraordinary experience for me. I did not think that I would be able doing what I have dared to do (..) Your passion for the cause is clearly recognisable and it proves once again that the best way to pass on is what puts you in flames (..) Thank you for this incredibly demanding, rewarding, touching, wonderful weekend!"
"I thought it was great, how you have clearly promoted your personal style, and all of us thereby encouraged to seek to find our own style, and stand to it. And at the same time you give the technique its place, as well.
I really admire how you were attending all of us very personally, but didn't let yourself take out of the concept.
How you answered questions with counter questions each time again ("Do you see it like that"). As a result, you help to figure it out yourself, to find one's own view. And above all, you make us constantly aware: there are only individual answers, opinions, attitudes and points of view, as many as there are people (..) And one more thing: Thanks for the super great, well-structured very clear script!"
"I do not want to miss the opportunity to warmly thank you for the workshop, which allows me to learn new ways of photography. Now I'm off to find my own way (..) Anyway, it's very exciting."

Harold Naaijer is an international pro photographer with a passion for street photography and teaching. He has taught one year full time at a photo academy, but found out that you can only teach properly if you are in the middle of the (photo) action. Harold developed his personal photography workshops which he offers in Salzburg & Vienna (Austria), Utrecht & Rotterdam (the Netherlands), Lisbon (Portugal) and soon in Cairo (Egypt).
In recent years his work is exhibited in various group and solo shows in international galleries and art places in Austria, the Netherlands, Portugal, Finland and Syria. Various books were published, in collaboration with his good friend and Dutch writer Donald Niedekker.
In 2007 and 2008 Harold organised and curated the first and second edition of the International Photo Festival Portugal. Photographers from Europe, US and Asia participated in this event.
